Certificate in Retailing

Introduction

The Certificate in Retailing programme aims to equip students with the basic knowledge and skills needed at the frontline work environment and provide an opportunity for career advancement in the Retail industry.

It is suitable for sales and marketing practitioners in all sectors who seek to upgrade their professional selling skills and marketing competencies for more effective marketing performance and career advancement.

It also aims to equip non-marketing students with the essential marketing capabilities to enhance their employment prospects in a sales or marketing career.

Programme Structure

This is a 6-month part-time programme, covering 4 modules with a total of 120 contact hours.

The delivery of this programme involves lectures, group discussions, case studies and presentations by students. Classes are usually held two times a week. Weekend block classes may be available subject to adequate student enrolment. Weekly lectures are conducted by qualified and experienced local lecturers approved by the institute.

Students are required to pass the overall assessment in order to be granted a passing grade for each module. All students are required to fulfill the attendance requirement of at least 75% for each module before they are considered eligible to take the examinations / assessment of the module concerned.

Module Synopsis

CR101 Understanding Customers

This module draws attention to how demand is generated by consumers and how marketers use various marketing tools to understand consumer behaviour and to create consumer satisfaction. Students are expected to acquire a working knowledge of consumer behaviour and be able to integrate terminologies, concepts, and techniques into real world situations.

• Consumers in the marketplace
• Personality and lifestyles
• Perception

CR102 Introduction to Retailing

This module introduces students to the principles of retailing and examines retailing techniques and the factors that influence modern retailing. Key concepts examined include retail customer buying behaviour, competition in retailing, store location, store layout, merchandising, pricing and promotional issues and problems.

• Introduction to retailing
• Advertising and promotion
• Managing retail operations

CR103 Effective Performance in a Retail Environment

This module focuses on developing skills in face-to-face customer interactions and building a professional image. While it is important for a business or marketing students to have wide and varied technical knowledge and skills, it is equally crucial to acquire the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and nonverbally.

Some of the topics that will be covered:

• Effective oral and listening skills
• Fluency and self-expression
• Emotional intelligence

CR104 Retail Store Operations

This module focuses on developing knowledge in managing the operations of a retail store and creating a positive shopping experience for customers. Topics on retail store functions and other day-to-day operations such as stock management, store security, recruitment, selection and motivation of store employees, customer service approaches and visual merchandising will be examined.

• Stock management

Application & Administration Details

Entry Requirements

All applicants must possess any one of the following of the equivalent recognised qualification:

  • 3 GCE ‘N’ Passes (Grade A-D or Grade 1-5) in English Language and two other subjects, or
  • 2 GCE ‘O’ Grades (Grade 1-8) in any two subjects, or
  • Completed PSLE with at least 4 years of working experience, or
  • Completed Secondary 1 with at least 3 years of working experience, or
  • Mature candidate of 30 years old with at least 8 years of working experience.
  • Candidates with other qualifications can be considered on case-by-case basis.

English Requirements

  • At least IELTS 5.5, or
  • At least iBT TOEFL 35 – 45, or
  • Its equivalent (Applicants may be subjected to a written and/or oral assessment of their language proficiency conducted by the PEI).
  • *Minimum age requirement: 16 years old
